Rosaline who?

Romeo and Juliet opens with a melancholy Romeo in despair over his unrequited love for Rosaline.  By the end of Act II, Scene II, he has forgotten her completely, and is engaged to Juliet.

How is Romeo's love for Juliet different from what he felt for Rosaline?  How do you feel about Romeo, knowing that he was just in love with another girl a few hours before?  And why did Shakespeare choose to include the Rosaline storyline in the play?

Respond using SPECIFIC DETAILS from the play!

  2. Romeo's love for Juliet is very different from what he felt for Rosaline. Juliet actually has feelings for Romeo while Rosaline did not. Love can change very quickly sometimes so I have no problem with Romeo loving another girl only a few hours after he loved Rosaline. Most likely, Shakespeare included this in the play so that it could create tension in the beginning of the play as to who Romeo really loved. Obvisiously, Romeo and Juliet are in love with each other and they deserve to be with each other no matter what. Its a good thing that Romeo was able to forget about Rosaline because then he would of never gotten to know Juliet at the party.

  3. When Romeo loves Rosaline, he acts gloomy, lovesick, and depressed. But with Juliet, his love is reborn and he is excited. I believe Romeo may be acting irrationally and hastily in wanting to marry Juliet, especially since he just got over a past love. With Romeo's love for Rosaline starting the play, it sets the whole story up. Since Romeo is sad because of her, he goes to the party and meets Juliet.

  4. Cause Juliet had feelings for him while Rosaline didnt. I find it not to be that weird cause if he truly loves her then love is love you cant stop it. to create tension between the characters.

  5. Romeo's love for Juliet is much more passionate than the one he had for Rosaline. I feel this way because he feels physically pulled to her. At the moment i think Romeo just wants to be in love with someone because he was saying how beautiful Rosaline and he throws it all away for a girl he just met. I think Shakespeare does this to get the audience to feel the impact of how much Romeo is so impelled to Juliet.

  6. I think that Romeos love for Roselyn was not love as much as it was lust the reason they broke up was because she was chaste and didn't love him but he really loved her but she loved the fact of him really in my honest opinion. I think he included this because he just needed a way to make rome seem like a true lover and with out that they would have never had taken the walk for romeo to kinda cool of so yeah.

  7. Romeo's for Juliet is very different from the love he felt for Rosaline. When he was with Rosaline she seemed to always drag him down. Thinking of hermade him sad and he felt very heavy. As soon as Juliet caught his eye, it was like a weight was lifted. He felt light as a feather and as though he had cupids wings. He even said his love for her made him fly over the orchard wall. I think that Romeo wasn't truly in love with Rosaline. He didn't know what true love felt like and believed that she was the only one that he could ever love. When he saw Juliet everything changed and he realized that he had no true feelings toward Rosaline. I find it kind of strange that he fell so deeply in love with Juliet in one night without having a full conversation with each other. Also that they felt so in love through one night that they wanted to change their names and get married. I think Shakespeare chose to include the Rosaline storyline in the play because it showed that this love he felt for Juliet was different than anything he felt before. He loved Juliet so much that he totally forgot about Rosaline and the heavy burden he felt when he wanted her. Juliet made him light as a feather unlike Rosaline.

  8. Romeo's love for Juliet differs from his love for Rosaline because Romeo deeply loves Juliet because he said in his dialogue that he can feel the difference between his previous love for Rosaline and his present love for Juliet. Romeo wants to constantly be with her like when he jumps over the orchard wall to see and talk to her. Also, when Juliet asks Romeo how he got over the wall, he replies by saying "With love's light wings did I o'erperch these walls". Personally, I feel that Romeo can push into things without thinking them through. I feel that Romeo can be narrowminded. But I think that Shakespeare included Rosaline because it shows the audience how much Romeo loves Juliet. He showed that Romeo's feelings about love had changed from sad and depressed to happy and overjoyed.

  9. Romeo's love for Juliet differs from what he felt for Rosaline because with Rosaline, he was melancholy. For example, he says in Act 1 Sc. 1, "Not having that, which, having, makes them short." He means that his love for Rosaline makes his days long and sad. However with Juliet, he says, in regards to Juliet's question about how he got under her window, "With love's light wings did I o'erperch these walls..." meaning that being in love with Juliet makes him light and happy. I feel that Romeo is someone who falls in love quick, and falls out of love just as quick. Rash and impulsive, and he doesn't consider practicalities, the mark of someone who has been raised in the lap of wealth. I think Shakespeare choose to include the Rosaline storyline because it shows exactly how impetuous Romeo can be. It leads up to his actions at the end. He suddenly decides killing yourself can conquer some sort of love issue, blah, blah, blah, and does kill himself without a second thought.

  10. Romeo's love for Juliet is different from his love for Rosaline because he thought that love was supposed to be a burden and he wasn't supposed to be happy when he was in love with Rosaline. When he fell in love with Juliet, he felt happy and thought that love was now a good thing. I think that Romeo needs to slow down and think about his feelings before he goes and announces that he is in love with someone. I think that Shakespeare added Rosaline so that the people reading the book don't know if Romeo is really in love with Juliet or if he will find another girl in a few hours. Cole Attar.

Romeo's love for Rosaline drags him into the dirt, makes him heavy and depressed, whereas Juliet's love makes him fly on Cupid's wings; he is light and walking on cloud nine. I think that with Rosaline he was more in love with being in love, and with Juliet he realizes that love isn't just a silly thing and it is real and I believe he matures by that realization. The fact that he was in love with Rosaline a few hours before makes no difference to me, for I know that it was just silly infatuation. I think Shakespeare included this in the story to show that true love will overshadow all previous affections and take over completely.

  12. I think that his love for Juliet is different from what he felt for Rosaline becuase now he is more sure that Juliet is his true love and better yet she loves him back. I feel that Romeo just got tired of running after someone he would never get and to his luck found his true love. Shakespeare chose to include the Rosaline storyline because I think that he wanted to keep the reader wondering if Romeo would either stay with Juliet even though she is a capulet or just go back to Rosaline.

  13. At the beginning of the play, Romeo is distraught over his unrequited love for Rosaline and feels like he will never be able to love again. He believes that his love can never die and there is no one like her in the world. This causes him to become mopey and melancholy. However, when he sees Juliet, he instantly knows he is in love with her. His love for Rosaline completely fades by the time of the balcony scene. He compares her to the sun, as if his love for her is being reborn into a new day. She is so bright and vibrant that "the birds would sing and think it were not night." Juliet basically lights up his world.
To me, it seems pretty insane that Romeo, who just hours before was moping over Rosaline, can fall in love by just looking at someone. I think of Romeo as a rash thinker with a teenage brain. He is quick to fall in love and to him, love at first sight is real. It also shows that he is a lover, but very impulsive, even though his relationship with Juliet ends up being true love.
I believe Shakespeare included Rosaline in the play to symbolize that love can spring from anywhere. I also think she represents unpredictable young love. Romeo loves Rosaline and is so depressed when she does not love him back. That sounds like a typical teenage romance. However, he instantly falls in love with Juliet the moment he sees her. To me, that represents how unpredictable young love is and how it can completely change course. Also, even though the two families were enemies, Romeo and Juliet still loved each other very much.

  14. Romeo's love for Juliet is different from what he felt for Rosaline because he loved her but he was mopey since she didn't love him back. Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight and instantly feel a connection. Knowing that he was just in love with another girl a few hours before, I feel that Romeo isn't a player because he couldn't get Rosaline to love him but he crushes a lot for forgetting about her as soon as he see's and falls in love with Juliet. I think that Shakespeare chooses to include the Rosaline storyline in the play for drama and to portray Romeo as being impulsive by falling in love too easily and asking Juliet to marry him when they've only known each other for a couple hours.

Romeo's love is different for Juliet because Rosaline didn't love Romeo, but Juliet does. Rosaline was almost ignoring Romeo when he loved her, which brought his mood down, making him seem mopey all the time. Romeo can move from person to person fast and fall in love with them too, and if the person doesn't love him back, he could become depressed from being rejected so many times. I think Shakespeare included the Rosaline story in the play because it shows how much Romeo and Juliet love each other and how fast Romeo can move from loving one person to another.

  16. Romeos love is different because he found a girl who will love him back, but that wasn't the case with Rosaline. I think Romeo a bag full of mixed emotions, a minute before he was chasing Rosaline around the party, then after you see him dancing with Juliet as if nothing happened. I think Shakespeare includes Rosalines part because to show the idea of love at first sight for Romeo and Juliet. After she tells Romeo that she will never marry, he becomes depressed, then he meets Juliet and instantly falls in love.

  17. Romeos love for Juliet is different from his love with Rosaline because he thought that him and Rosaline were meant for each other, but then she left him heartbroken. Love at first sight took him over when he saw Juliet and completely forgot about Rosaline. I think that Romeo is truly in love with Juliet because he thought that he would never get over Rosaline but then he saw Juliet and his heart changed. You can't fall in love with someone like that unless its real, so I don't think he's a player, I think his heart just changed. Shakespeare chose to include Rosaline in the play because it shows how much Romeo falls for Juliet to be able to get over someone, from seeing her just one time.

  19. I think that Romeo's love for Rosaline wasn't true love, whereas his love for Juliet is for real. Juliet is his destined love (according to Shakespeare). I think that Shakespeare added the Rosaline story inorder to show people how much Romeo and Juliet loved each other. He totally dropped a girl he had been going after for weeks, for a girl he met a few hours ago.

  20. Romeo has a different love for Juliet then he had for Rosaline. When Romeo was in love with Rosaline, the love was unrequited and he was unhappy. When Romeo fell in love with Juliet, the love was indeed requited and he felt as though he was floating on clouds. I feel that Romeo's ability to fall out and in of love in just a few hours was doubtful. To me this means he didn't know the true meaning of love and that he wasn't really in love with Rosaline at all. My doubt was assuaged when love led Romeo to the castle, up and over the orchard wall, to under the balcony where Juliet was found. This proves that he was really in love to me. Lastly, I feel like Rosaline had to be in this play. Without her it would be like every other love story with teenagers falling in love. This story was different. The fact that he completely forgot about Rosaline meant that his love for Juliet was so incredibly and deeply strong. Without him being in love with Rosaline in the beginning of the play, we wouldn't truly know how strong his love for Juliet really is.

  21. Romeo's love for Juliet isn't much different than his love for Rosaline, even though the situations in Romeo's life are totally different. Romeo's love for Rosaline was unrequited, but Juliet loves Romeo, which makes Romeo's love for Juliet probably stronger. It is obvious that Romeo is just a player, and probably wasn't even in love with Rosaline in the first place, just a crazy impulsive thinker who "falls in love" with any girl he sees. I think Shakespere includes Rosaline to make us think about Romeo in multiple lights, giving us insight on what he can really be like.

  22. Romeos love for Juliet is different because he falls for Juliet at first sight, not like Rosaline where he knew her before. Love at first sight is much more strong because you don't even know the person but you're already attached. I think that Romeo truly loves Juliet because he saw her and was in love, even though he thought he loved Rosalin a few house ago, thats all in the past now that his heart is with Juliet. Shakespear chose to include Rosalin in the play because it shows how strong his love is for Juliet to be able to get over Rosaline so quickly.

  23. Romeo thought that him and Rosaline were going to be together forever but in the end Rosaline ended up braking Romeo's heart and Romeo was so heart broken that his love life is over forever, but once he sees Juliet then he knows that he isn't finished yet and that he knows for sure and she does to that their love is invincible and that they will be together forever. I think that Romeo should not have been going for two in the same day and that he should have taken time and got to know Juliet then going in aggressively and covering up his sorrow from earlier in the day. Shakespeare probably wanted to get the drift of Romeo loving this girl that none of the readers know about but have a feel for him. Also Shakespeare probably wanted to get a little drama in the beginning and start the readers off excited and hungry for more reading!

  24. Romeo's love for Juliet is different than what he felt for Rosaline because he loved her and she wouldn't love him back because she was never going to get married. Juliet loves Romeo and wants to be with him which makes Romeo forget about Rosaline. Knowing that Romeo was just in love with another girl a few hours before doesn't make me trust him so much because he could change his mind again. I think he choose to include Rosaline in the story because he needed a way for Mercutio and Romeo to have a reason to go to the Capulet's party and be able for Romeo to meet Juliet.

  25. Romeo's love for Juliet is different from what he felt for Rosaline because he was sad that Rosaline never loved him back. But he is happy that Juliet loves him back and wants to be with him. I feel that it wasn't meant to be with Rosaline because she never loved him back and they could never be together if she didnt love him. I think that it is right for him to fall in love with a girl that wants to be with him, which is Juliet. I think that Shakespeare choose to include the Rosaline storyline in the play for intensity and drama. And for Romeo to look like a bad guy for falling in love with one girl and then a few hours later fall in love with another girl, in which he asked to marry her. Even though they barely knew anything about each other. He also might have done that for the audience to get hooked into the play, so they are left wanting to know more and more.

  26. Romeo's love for Juliet is very different from his love he previously felt for Rosaline. When he loved Rosaline he was in a depression and she did not love him back. Now, with Juliet, he is happy, she loves him back, and they will soon get married. I feel like Romeo is very confused on the meaning of love because I do not believe that you can go from "loving" someone one day and then the next day be head over heals in love with someone and then wanting to get married the very next day. I think that Shakespeare included Rosaline in the storyline for the readers to choose if they wanted to portray Romeo as a young man who falls in love way to easily and does not know the true meaning of love or a young man who truely loves the women he "loves".

  27. I fell that Romeo's love for Rosaline made him depressed due to the fact that Rosaline has taken an oath of chastity and would never love Romeo back, This fact alone sent Romeo into a downward spiral and his mood deepened and he bagan to enter a stage in his life of depression when everything he did was not good enough because Rosaline would never love him back. Since Juliet had just the same feeling for Romeo as he had towards her, Romeo felt more happy because he knew his love was returned. If I were Juliet, I would be a little questionable about Romeo's love because he had just been so "In love" with another girl just several hours ago.
I myself feel that Romeo is just too quick to jump the gun and say he is in love with a girl that he just met and they want to get married. I would never fall in love with a girl that do not know well enough to get married in 3 hours after meeting. I feel that Romeo needs a little help because he is in love 2 times in 3 hours with 2 totally different girls.

I think Shakespeare had decided to include Rosaline in the play to just show how emotional and special the love between Juliet and Romeo because it was so powerful it just blew the so called "love" that Romeo had for Rosaline out of the water. It was so powerful that the second he laid eyes on the girl, he totally forgot about Rosaline and had proclaimed that he was in love with another girl

  28. I feel like Romeo did the same thing with Rosaline that he did with Juliet, and that he got tired of Rosaline. I think that Romeo is a guy who cant keep a relationship. Shakespeare pout Rosaline in the poem to show that Romeo had the same love for her as he does for Juliet now.

  29. Romeo's love for Juliet is different from what he felt for Rosaline because he was sad that Rosaline didn't love him back. I don't really know how to feel about Romeo because it was much different along time ago. Also Rosaline didn't love him back so they weren't "in love" so it really doesn't matter that he found a new girl. I think that Shakespeare included Rosaline in the play to show how people can move on very quickly.

  30. I think that Shakespeare included Rosaline for a real reason. In the beginning of the story Romeo thinks that Rosaline is the most beautiful girl in the world and that he will never find another love. When he meets Juliet and is so entranced and happy it shows how strong his love for Juliet really is, because he went from so low, to so high very quickly. Juliet must truly be special to Romeo if he can be engaged to her after being depressed by unrequited love only hours before. In conclusion, I think the presence of Rosaline in the beginning was to strengthen and exaggerate the love that Romeo and Juliet feel for each other.

  32. Romeos love is different for Juliet other then his love for Rosaline. Romeo loved Rosaline, but he couldn't be with her because, she didn't love him back. He felt mopey and melancholy, and thought that he was never going to be able to love again. Romeo didn't want to forget about Rosaline. He thought she was the most beautiful, unique girl and thought she was the only girl he could ever love, but he was wrong, because he looked over to find a new love walk into his heart starting a new desire for him. When Romeo and Juliet first saw each other they were inspired by each other, there was a spark. For Juliet and Romeo, it was love at first sight. Romeo knew he could love Juliet. Shakespeare chose to put the role of Rosaline in the play because it added more to the story. He wanted to prove that you can love more than one person in your lifetime and that just because you get pushed down to the ground; it doesn't mean you shouldn't get back up and open your eyes for new beginnings.

  33. I think that Romeo's feelings for Juliet differ from his feelings for Rosaline because of the face that he would feel depressed and low when he was denied by Rosaline, but for Juliet they make a connection instantly and his love for her seems much more intense. He seems to be willing to go to the end of the world and back and stare death in the face for her, while for Rosaline he seemed to be content just sitting around and complaining rather than actually taking action, and I do not think that Romeo is a bad guy for loving a new girl as people will always think they are in love but when you find someone you are really compatible with you will know. I think Shakespeare added Rosaline as Romeo's love at first to show us that true love will not always be our first and that it indeed may come from the most unexpected places, even from the family of the people you have learned your whole lives are supposed to be your enemy.

  36. Romeo seems to be in love with whomever he sees. Romeo feels lust for Roseline but, he feels love for Juliet. The difference is that Roseline didn't love Romeo back but Juliet did. Romeo seems to be one of those people who fall in love with other people quick and get over the past. Romeo falls in love easily. I feel like Shakespeare included Roseline in the play to give more feeling or emotions for the audience to witness and get more intact with the play. It also gives more of story to add on too. Shakespeare was trying to get as much feeling and emotions as possible make his play appeal to others. It also built some suspense and made the audience wonder who was Roseline and what was she like.

  42. Rosaline didn't love Romeo back. So when Romeo loved Rosaline, he acted gloomy and depressed. Juliet and Romeo fell in love at first sight, so it was a completely different scenario. Romeo's love was requited and it made him happy and sure. I feel that Romeo is a good man, and he deserves to be happy. I think that Shakespeare added Rosaline in the play because she built up the feeling of love at first sight. 43. When Romeo was in love with Rosaline, she did not love him back. That made him incredibly heart broken. Now he has met Juliet and she does love him back. Now everything is completely different for him. He is so much more in love with her than he has ever been with anyone or anything. I feel that Romeo could not help himself. This new girl, Juliet, she made him completely forget about Rosaline. He even says "Have I not loved till now." With Juliet it was love at first sight. I think that Shakespeare put Rosaline in the play to overdo how Juliet made him feel. To emphasize how much Juliet stole his heart. How he was so in love with a girl and as soon as he made eye contact with Juliet he forgot all about Rosaline. Shakespeare put this in the over exaggerate Romeo and Juliet's love at first sight. :)

  45. Romeos love for Juliet is different than Rosaline's because Juliet loves him back unlike Rosaline she did not feel the same way towards him. Knowing that Romeo just loved another girl only a few hours ago made made me think that Romeo was not really in love with Rosaline. He may have liked Rosaline a lot and had strong feelings for him but did not get to the point of loving her because it takes a while to truly love a person so much that nothing in the world can change the feeling. It also made me think that maybe he fell in love in first sight so maybe he really does love Juliet but did not really love Rosaline just believed he did. I believe shakespeare chose to include Rosaline in the story to show that people can fall in love in first sight. By having her in the story it shows how Romeo was affected from the first time he laid eyes on Juliet. It makes his love more powerful because he was willing to leave behind a women that he believed was the love of his life for Juliet who he now is in love with but more because he was able to completely forget about Rosaline to make Juliet his one and only.

Then all of asoden he has feelings for a complete stranger which i think is stupid because hes in love with a girl in which he had never met or even knew her last name. 47. Romeos love for juliet differs from his love for Rosaline in many ways. I think this is because he is loved in return, and this is making the long stronger. This love is also stronger because even knowing she's a Capulet he still loves her. Knowing Romeo was in love with a girl a few hours before doesn't mean he doesn't love Juliet. I think this just means that, he is now over Rosaline and found a girl that he really did love. I think Shakespeare added Rosaline in this to show that, his love for Juliet isn't typical but very strong, I also think he did this to add suspense and for people to really wonder who she is.

  52. Romeo's love for Juliet is so different from his love for Rosaline. When he was 'in love' with Rosaline it seemed more like he was only in love with her for her beauty and honestly just liked the fact of being in love. I think him falling in love with Juliet that quick makes it more powerful in the story! There is something between them that keeps pulling them toward's each other even though they don't know much about each other.

  53. Romeos love is different for Juliet than for Rosaline because Rosaline didn't love him back. Juliet loves Romeo and Juliet. Romeo can fall in love quickly but also fall out of love quickly. I think that he doesn't know what love really is. I think that Shakespeare decides to put Rosaline into the play because it makes the play more interesting and its shows who Romeo really is.

  54. Romeo's love for Juiet is stronger then it was for Rosaline. This is because Juliet actually loves him back. Rosaline didn't love him back. He knows she loves him because he heard her talking about him on her balcony. I think that Romeo should have spent some more time getting over Rosaline. He seemed to love her very much but, it didn't take him long at all to just go to the next girl. I think Shakespeare included Rosaline because he is trying to show that you can be lifted up by love. It also creates a dramatic beginning to the story which will catch peoples attention and make them want to watch even more. It shows that you can love more then one person in your life.

  55. Romeo felt more connected with Juliet rather than with Rosaline. He wanted her right when he saw her even though Rosaline was standing right next to her when they were dancing. Romeo is sometimes judged at the fact that he was so in love with a girl then come to find out that 10min later is so in love with someone else, its not his fault he just has bad judgement at the fact that he thought he loved Rosaline but he really loved Juliet. To tell the truth i do not know why Shakespeare put Rosaline in the book, maybe because it shows that love can change in an instant it can go up and down like a roller coaster.

  56. Romeo's love is completely different from when he loved Rosaline. Rosaline was just fantasy in his head. She had never loved him and never will, so why love her back? However, Juliet is real. She loves him back and they connected during the balcony scene. She took marriage (a dream she did not think of) and applied it to Romeo. Honestly, I'm not sure if Romeo really loved Rosaline- at least after the rejection. Romeo didn't know how to react to this unworldly answer, so he held onto the emotion he knew too well. Rosaline was in the play because without her, Romeo and Juliet would've never met.

  57. It seemed that Romeo showed more love towards Juliet than towards Rosaline. Romeo said that he didn't know true love until he saw Juliet, which shows that he loved her more than he had loved Rosaline. I feel like it's weird that Romeo falls in love with a girl even though he was in love with someone entirely different only a few hours earlier. I'm not one that believes in love at first sight, and I find it a little stupid that Romeo is in love with two different girls in the same day. I think Shakespeare included Rosaline in the story to show the differences between his love for Rosaline, which was false, and his love for Juliet, which was true. It adds more to the whole idea of love at first sight.

  58. Romeo's love for Juliet is different from what he felt for Roseline because Juliet loves him back. They fell in love at first sight and there was this sudden connection between them. I feel like Romeo does fall for girls easily because he did ask Juliet to marry her after just meeting her a few hours before. I honestly don't think Romeo knew the true meaning of 'love' before he met Juliet. I think that Shakespeare chose to include the story of Roseline because it adds more drama to the story and it shows how strong Romeo and Juliet's love really is.

  59. Romeo's love for Rosaline is different than his love for Juliet in many ways. One of these is that with Juliet his love for her is returned as opposed to how it was not with Rosaline. Another way his love is different this time is how Romeo is pursuing Juliet. To get to her he climbed and orchid wall and faced many dangers, while with Rosaline he moped around and felt sorry for himself.

Knowing that Romeo was in love with Rosaline just a few hours ago it makes me wonder if he has genuine feelings for Juliet or just thinks he has got to get married soon.

Why Shakespeare put Rosaline in the play is a mystery to me. She was probably was put in there to add more drama and suspense to the plot line. Also, she could have been put in there to show how true his love for Juliet actually is because he was just loathing over Rosaline and ditched her for his "true love".
